Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - The New York Islanders selected forward John Tavares with the first overall pick in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.
Tavares, the highly-touted 18-year-old prospect out of the Ontario Hockey League, posted 58 goals and 104 points in 56 games last season split between the Oshawa Generals and London Knights.
Over four minor-league seasons, the Toronto-area native has racked up 215 goals in just 227 games.
The Tampa Bay Lightning, who selected forward Steven Stamkos with the first-overall choice in 2008, nabbed Swedish defenseman Victor Hedman with the number two pick this time around. continue>>
